MR Features of osteomyelitis

Abstract
To evaluate the usefulness of MR and MR findings of osteomyelitis, We retrospectively reviewed MR findings of 16 cases with osteomyelitis proved by surgery. Anatomic location of lesions were femur(n=6), tibia(n=4), humerus(n=3), radius(n=1),
calcaneus(n=1), and fibula(n=1). Foci of active inflammation had low signal intensity on T1-weighted images, and high signal intensities on T2-weighted images. Gd-DTPA enhanced T1WI showed rim-like or patch enhancement of bone marrow and soft
tissue
lesions in 11 cases.
We concluded that MRI, by displaying alteration of signal intensities and morphological changes of bone marrow and soft tissue is the choice of modality in diagnosis and evaluation of activity of osteomyelitis.
